Just Out of Reach Reviews
3 - 3 1/2 HeartsReview written for MM Good Book Reviewshttp://mmgoodbookreviews.wordpress.com/Defence lawyer Owen is starting to get his life back on track after a really bad year when he receives a phone call from his childhood best friend, Reed, for help. Owen rushes to his hometown to defend Reed’s brother from a triple murder charge, the evidence is overwhelming but Owen will do everything he can for Reed. Reed starts to think it was a mistake to ask Owen for help, he has never gotten over Owen leaving him without a word fifteen years before, but denying his feelings is impossible and when the murder case is over will he be able to let Owen leave his life again? This story is a mix of murder investigation and reuniting with first love, forgiving the past and starting anew. Owen and Reed parted ways when Owen left without a word when they were eighteen, Reed might have been able to forgive him if it hadn’t been for the promise that Owen made the night before his departure. Now fifteen years later Reed needs Owen’s help, hoping that he can keep his lingering feelings hidden. Owen has always thought of Reed, he had to do what he did and now he will get to see Reed again even if it is in the middle of a horrific triple murder, Owen just prays that he can get through to Reed that he never stopped caring. I really liked the mystery of the murder case and the investigation that Owen launched, trying to discover exactly who would frame Reed’s brother all the while trying to make things right with Reed. Reed and Owen’s relationship is very rocky and it has sharp ups and downs, you can see the reasoning behind both men and the real awkwardness of the situation, the tension is palpable between them and you just know it could explode into passion at any time. The story is well written and although the mystery is well done, I think the relationship lacks real depth, even though they clearly still love each other after all the time apart, the relationship was written more as an afterthought with little real effort on either men’s side other than their continued attraction. I will recommend this to those that love first love stories, mystery, danger, reuniting love and a happy ending.
I had high hopes for this story, the review was rather pulling, but damn it, this story is such a cliché, I actually feel cheated. Owen was shitty character from the very beginning. He was "Oh so in love" with Reed, but hey he wanted to study, to get a good job, etc. There was always something what Owen wanted and then he left without goodbye or even a letter, because he was so much in Love with Reed, yeah right! And after fifteen years, a broken marriage, Owen comes back to help Reed’s Brother Jeremy, who was accused of murder. And of course Owen is still deeply in love with Reed, but he knows Reed is mad at him, for leaving without goodbye. But hey he is here now and Owen is prepared to stay this time, because he still LOVES REED and Reed is now on his plan. It’s the right time to stay and be with Reed. "I want you to see what I've wanted to do to for you the last fifteen years." Yeah sure still again what Owen wanted, because he was so MUCH in LOVE. Why didn't someone just shoot this character!
Owen is an asshat. He loves Reed but simply disappears off to college one day without so much as a "thanks for the game of tonsil hockey" for the man he said he was giving it all up for. Reed was slightly less of an douche for demanding Owen give it all up but at least he didn't bugger off for fifteen years, marry a women, and never contact him again. When Owen comes back, he's still an asshat but now, Reed is a sniveling jello-spined shell of a man who - except for one brief, shining, drunken moment - is pathetically grateful every time Owen so much as spits on him.Neither man is likable, nothing was actually resolved except the murder (the outcome of which was predictable and stereotypically misogynistic - crazy women sooo in love with a man she kills his wife and steals her shoes?), and I've lost an hour of my life that I'll never get back. Boo.
I really liked this bookI enjoyed reading this book. I like that how in the beginning the relationship was between Owen and Reed that they feel in love with each other then they got back together with a happy ending. I like when a book can start off happy then sad in the middle and it has a happy ending. I will recommend this to other people and friends I know.
This is a really good short book. When Owen leaves his home at eight-teen, he also leave his best friend Reed. The boy he told he loved the night before he left.15 years later Owen returns to defend Reeds older brother from a murder charge. He meet Reed, the family again and have to deal with a divorce at the same time.THis is so sweet and have a nice murder story and a love story too.
It started off okay enough but it slowly delved into a cringe-worthy tale about two former best friends and a brother who was framed for murder.
